This configuration is a general purpose liquid transmission cell. It comprises rectangular windows and an appropriate spacer. Spacers of various thicknesses can be used to vary the cell pathlength. The sample is introduced via filling ports, and the transmission cell is easily disassembled for cleaning. It is particularly well suited for samples that are hard to clean.
This configuration uses circular windows without filling ports. The sample is placed directly onto one of the circular windows, and the other window is then placed lightly on top. Spacers of various thicknesses can be used to vary the cell pathlength. This design makes the cell ideally suited for analyzing very viscous liquids, gels, mulls, and pastes.
The sealed liquid transmission cell has the window pair and spacer amalgamated as an assembly. The resulting bond between the window and lead spacer provides a corrosion-resistant leak-free seal for preventing evaporation and loss of sample. Each sealed liquid cell has a precise pathlength that is calibrated using interference fringes generated by the empty cell in the beam of a spectrometer. The constant pathlength makes the cell ideally suited for quantitative analysis.
